The idea of using the Kaleidescape system for Blu-rays is appealing, but the practical application just doesn't seem to be there. The M300 and M500 players are designed specifically to work with the Kaleidescape server for playback.  When connected to the server, they can play backed-up Blu-rays at full 1080p resolution, 24 frames per second, and with bitstream pass-through of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

Unlike the M300, the M500 can play back Blu-ray discs.  It can also import from Blu-ray, DVD and CD right onto your server.  The problem with the server system is that you can't go without your Blu-ray discs.  You'll still need your discs physically present in one of your connected players in order to play back the content.   It's something Kaleidescape acknowledges, and they're hoping to correct it by bringing out a disc loader that would hold a large amount of discs.

You can pick up the M300 now at a price of $2,495, while the M500 will set you back $3,995.  The players will start shipping out on May 18th.
