Bowers & Wilkins has been hard at work on a sound system for the 2011 Jaguar XJ.  Not only is it atypical in the amount of attention being paid to the car’s speaker placement, but the XJ is also the first Jaguar ever that features a 5.1 surround system.

"Typically, loudspeakers do not receive this degree of attention," said B&W director Martin Lindsay.  "[Speakers] are often an afterthought considered after window and door mechanisms are packaged."  The XJ is an exception though.  The speaker space was reserved early in the design process to ensure great acoustic results.

Bowers & Wilkins designers worked in tandem with those from Jaguar to ensure that neither the car’s aesthetics nor the sound of the speakers was compromised.  "Bowers & Wilkins also worked closely with the designers to create the unique grilles, not only allowing the sound to pass transparently," said Lindsay, "but also subtly, revealing Bowers & Wilkins’ characteristic yellow Kevlar speaker cones."
