The original Zune was seen as an unworthy contender to the iPod, but Microsoft has been working hard on getting their MP3 players up to snuff.  The Zune HD lacks a lot of what makes the iPod Touch great, but it’s got its own features to brag about, like the ability to play back 720p video over HDMI.

Microsoft’s latest Zune HD packs in 64GB of memory, enough to store a nice chunk of HD content.  You won’t find any other improvements, but the Zune HD 4.5 firmware brings plenty to the table.

For starters, the historically format specific Zune has opened up a bit.  The Zune HD will now be able to utilize both AVI and XVID files without the need for transcoding.  It makes the whole process of getting video on to the device that much easier.

Firmware update 4.5 also adds some nice touches for those using the Zune TV Dock.  You’ll now be able to browse the Zune marketplace while using the dock and get a nice graphical interface right on your TV when browsing music.
You can pick up the Zune HD 64GB direct from Microsoft for $349.
