There are over twenty releases this week, but it’s hard to get excited about the Pierce Brosnan version of ‘Thomas Crown Affair ‘or a less than impressive collection of low rent horror flicks. There’s one Blu-ray set to rule them all.
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Since Blu-ray came about, there have been two trilogies asked for above all others. The release of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy means that the first is finally here. Sadly, these aren’t the extended releases that the hardcore fans really want, and they’re not full of extras like that huge DVD box set. They don’t even have commentary or isolated audio tracks. It’s also a bit disheartening that the video is less than perfect. While audio on all three discs is said to be excellent, there’s a definite discrepancy between each installment in terms of quality. ‘The Fellowship of the Rings’ is particularly bad, according to High-Def Digest’s Nate Boss. “Detail is far from consistent,” writes Boss. “From shot to shot in any scene, it's almost like watching the film from multiple grade sources culled together.” If you’re a fan of the extras, you may also be disappointed to know that the supplemental material for ‘Lord of the Rings’ comes on standard definition DVDs. In terms of extras for the Blu-ray release, you get a digital copy and BD-Live channel without any real content. This release is disappointing to say the least, but if you need your LoTR fix, it’ll hold you over until a fully featured Blu-ray edition comes out. A Nightmare on Elm Street It’s classic 80s horror brought back just before the remake hits theaters. Whether or not you’re excited about Jackie Earle Haley’s take on Freddie Kruger, you’ll definitely want the opportunity to relive the scares brought on by the original. It’s the movie that forever cemented Robert Englund and his bladed glove into the horror halls of legend.
