Walmart’s selling 3D televisions.  That sentence may not immediately strike you as a big deal, but it really is. Walmart is a giant chain, and the single biggest retailer in the US, but with that size comes a lack of speed and dexterity.  The company stocks safe bets, and they’re not known for taking chances.  DVD players, for example, didn’t finally hit Walmart shelves until 40% of American homes already had them.

This move represents Walmart’s desire to establish themselves more in the electronics field.  Carrying the latest in higher end HDTVs puts pressure on Best Buy and other popular electronics retailers, but on manufacturers as well. Walmart is planning to use its clout to help drive down prices by this holiday season.  As Walmart’s Gary Severson puts it, “We are going to be instrumental in helping to bring the costs down and bring more affordable 3-D experience to customers.”
