Apple finally released information on preordering the iPad today as well as the launch date.  The iPad will officially go on sale in less than a month on April 3rd and early adopters can preorder Apple's new device on March 12th, online and in Apple Stores.  This announcement brings a halt to the rumors of a delay due to hardware shortages.

Apple's iPad (Wi-fi Edition) will be available for a suggested retail price of $499 for the 16GB model, $599 for the 32GB and $699 for the 64GB.  The 3G edition comes at a steeper price; $629 for the 16GB, $729 for the 32GB and $829 for the $64GB.  The 3G model also requires a subscription to AT&T's wireless 3G network.

Most interesting for home theater owners, the launch of the iPad will likely bring about a slew of home theater remote applications.  There's already applications available for the iPhone / IPod Touch from Crestron, Sooloos and Boxee.  Expect to see more functionality built into those applications for the iPad and adapted versions for the much larger screen.

It's also a wide open field for home automation junkies.  Ideally, the iPad could be used to dim the lights in the room, power up the home theater equipment and bring up your  home theater interface on your HTPC.  Look for similar products like the Redeye mini to bring a IR hardware solution to the iPad and create the ultimate remote control solution for your home theater.
