There’s only one wide release coming to theaters this week, and a handful of movies coming to select theaters.  Still, I’ll take quality over quantity any day, and Scorsese tends to veer towards quality.  Click below to read about this week's releases.

Shutter Island

Leonardo Di Caprio takes the lead in this thriller that features he and Mark Ruffalo as U.S. Marshalls called to investigate a disappearance.  Reviews are mixed for the film, with some critics stating that Scorsese seems to have lost his touch.  Others, like Stephen Whitty, compare the film to Kubrik’s “The Shining”.  Whatever the consensus, if you’re looking for something new and you’re not in one of the big markets, Shutter Island may be your only option.

Ghost Writer

Ghost Writer could easily be described Roman Polanski’s love letter to Alfred Hitchcock.  It’s a psychological thriller starring Ewan McGregor and the reception has been very positive.  While it’s not Polanski’s best work – it’s said to feel a bit incomplete - Ghost Writer does tell a complex tale and feature some terrific acting on the parts of McGregor and Pierce Brosnon.
