This week’s releases are eclectic as ever.  While rereleases and repackagings abound, there are a few films in there that are truly worth picking up.  The rest though, you may need to be a fan already before considering it.

Black Dynamite

This is one of those films made just for fans of the genre.  It’s part spoof and part homage to the Blaxploitation films of the 70’s.  It stars Michael Jai White, Arsenio Hall and a cast full of familiar faces with less familiar names.  If you dig Blaxploitation, chances are you’ll love Black Dynamite.

Law Abiding Citizen

Jamie Foxx is a fantastic actor, but suffers from an inability to pick scripts.  After his startlingly good performance in The Soloist, Foxx is back in a relatively boring role in a fairly banal movie.  It’s one part Saw and one part Death Wish, and it’s got one of the least satisfying endings of all time.  Gerard Butler’s character is a bit fun, and there are some well executed action scenes, but don’t expect much more than that.

Cabin Fever

There’s a reason Eli Roth and Quentin Tarantino seem to get along so well.  They both absolutely adore classic slasher flicks.  As Kill Bill was Tarantino’s love letter to martial arts movies, Cabin Fever is Eli Roths love letter to 80’s style horror.  There’s violence, nudity, and buckets of blood.  If you’re a fan of 80’s style horror, this one was made for you.
Other releases this week:
  • Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever
  • Coco Before Chanel
  • Contempt
  • Dirty Harry Collection
  • Freeway Killer
  • Goodfellas: 20th Anniversary Edition
  • Hunger
  • The Ladykillers
  • Lola Montès
  • Ran
  • Revanche
