We’ve still got a way to go before we start seeing some really good 3D capable projectors hit the consumer market.  Most of the existing ones are either incredibly expensive or just not up to snuff.  The Acer S5200 is the latter.

Let’s start with the good.  Acer’s S5200 sports a 120Hz refresh rate that makes the projection of 3D video possible.  You’ll need glasses, of course, and an appropriate video card if your PC is your source.   It’s got a short throw and can display 81” images at a distance of just one meter.

The S5200 offers technology that enhances and extends the life of its lamps, and plenty of color boosting features.  It’s got a 2,500:1 contrast ratio and illumination up to 3,000 ANSI lumens.  The S5200 is even compatible with Crestron home automation systems.

Unfortunately, the downside is pretty huge.  Acer’s 3D projector may have a solid refresh rate, but it’s only got an XGA (1024 x 768) resolution.  It’s not HD, and it’s got a native aspect ratio of 4:3.

If you’re waiting for a great HD 3D projector, the S5200 isn’t it.  But if you’re satisfied with major sacrifice in the resolution department, Acer’s new projector can be yours for right around $1,000.
