It’s easy to be a bit jealous of those that get to take advantage of Verizon’s FiOS service.  They provide a huge amount of content and blazing fast internet at incredibly reasonable prices.  Admittedly, there’s a bit of shadenfreude when posting about a rate hike for Verizon customers.

Verizon has revealed their new FiOS bundles which include faster upload and download speeds, more HD channels and a steep increase in the early termination fee. The new Ultimate Triple-Play package includes in excess of ninety HD channels, premium content and FiOS voice service at $139.99 a month or $129.99 for new customers.  It also includes download rates of 35 Mbps and upload rates of 35 Mbps.  That’s more than enough speed for streaming video, downloading movies and even grabbing a nice big torrent.

New customers can opt for a free Home Media DVR rather than the discounted rate.  This will get you a DVR capable of recording up to twenty hours of HD programming and sending it to up to three televisions simultaneously.

The downside to all these new plans is that the early termination fee has increased by quite a bit.  Rather than the $179 normally charged, Verizon can charge as much as $360 for a cancelled contract.  Then again, with 35 Mpbs up and 35 Mpbs down plus a glut of HD programming, you probably won’t want to cancel any time soon.

These hikes are EXTREME. I currently pay $27 for the 25/15 Fios plan. This goes
up to $65 for the 25/25 plan (like who cares about upload speed and I was
already getting it). In Manhattan, make sure you're not planning to move at the
end of your lease or else you could get zonked if your new apartment does not
offer Fios. Oh, and all of the TV plans went up at least 30% (they require you
to take more channels == less choice -- then jack up the prices of all the
bundles). Ah -- that lovely $380 termination fee. I'm sure my bill will at least
double once my 2 year price guarantee is over.
