Three years after beginning the design process on the Encore 50, it’s finally ready to debut. The flagship speaker from Epos will debut at CES just under a week away. The cabinet for these floor-standing speakers measure s just about four feet high. It’s deeper than it is wide, 15 inches from front to back and just over ten inches wide. The cabinet is made of a birch-plywood MDF mix using plywood bracing within the inside to support the full 110 pound weight of the Encore 50. Separate bass, treble and mid-range sections are hermetically sealed within the cabinet, allowing the crossover itself to be located at the base of the cabinet. Each driver is wired individually to the crossover unit. A pair of 220mm woofers handles the bass, allowing a frequency range as low as 28Hz. The two woofers are bass reflex loaded by a 90mm port that’s positioned midway between them. According to Epos, the height of the woofers was chosen to help eliminate floor bounce cancellation and to ensure a smooth transition between the woofers and the 158mm mid range driver. The tweeter in the Encore 50 is a special version of the Epos Mi tweeter design. It’s got an anodized aluminum dome, a Kapton voice coil former and Ferro-Fluid damping. A price for the Encore 50 loudspeakers from Epos has not yet been announced, but further details will be revealed in early January. |
