We’re just a few days away from Christmas, and just in time to pick up District 9 – this year’s best amalgamation of science fiction and South African politics – for a loved one.  Neill Blomkamp’s directorial debut even makes us glad the Halo movie got canned, and that’s saying a lot.  Read on to see what else hits shelves this week. Continue on to see more of this week's releases:

Family Guy Presents: Something Something Something Dark Side - If this comes close to the sendup of A New Hope that Family Guy treated us to with their Blue Harvest special, it’s going to be worth picking up.  And while this will air on television eventually, the directors commentary, behind the scenes featurette and deleted scenes sure won’t.

(500) Days of Summer - It didn’t cost a lot to make and it doesn’t have big name actors, but the (500) Days of Summer is one of the year’s most unique films.  The story is told in a very cool nonlinear fashion and was hailed by critics as a breath of fresh air for the romantic comedy.

Other titles include:

  • All About Steve  (Sandra Bullock)
  • American Pie: The Book of Love
  • Beyond a Reasonable Doubt (Michael Douglas)
  • Extract  (Jason Bateman)
  • It Might Get Loud
  • Pandorum (Dennis Quaid)
  • Staten Island (Ethan Hawke)
