It’s a big weekend for film.  James Cameron’s Avatar is out and if he has his way, it’ll revolutionize the way we see movies from here on out.    This is also one of the last weekends of 2009, which means we’ll be seeing some limited releases for potential Oscar nominees.  Here’s what is coming out this week:

Avatar

Chances are, you’re going to see Avatar.  The positive reviews are glowing, praising the movie as the second coming of cinema.  It’s been compared by some to The Wizard of Oz in terms of its significance.  Even the negative reviews count Avatar among the most visually compelling films to date.

Did You Hear About the Morgans?

Though Sam Elliot in a film is usually a guaranteed viewing for me, the combination of Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker may be too much for most people to handle.  Did You Hear About the Morgans? Is a romantic comedy that’s hoping to catch ticket sales from people with no interest in Avatar.

Nine

Not to be confused with District 9 or the digitally animated film 9 that came out just a few months ago.  If you’re not seeing big blue aliens, this is the one to see this weekend.  It’s a romantic musical starring an impressive cast: Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Judy Dench, Fegie, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman and Sophia Loren.

Crazy Heart (limited)

A critically acclaimed story of a country music singer searching for redemption.  Jeff Bridges, Robert Duvall and Maggie Gyllenhaal star.   It also marks the directorial debut of actor Scott Cooper.
