The increasingly popular Roku line of streaming media players will be getting an upgrade in the next few weeks.  After automatically downloading a software patch, Roku players will be equipped with access to several new providers of internet video, photo sharing, and social networking.

Initially, the idea of having another set-top box just for streaming media seemed a bit preposterous, but with the ever growing amount of content offered by the Roku players, it’s looking better and better.  The most recent update, which Roku says is just the beginning, adds ten new options for Roku owners.

Familiar selections like Facebook Photos, Flickr and Pandora are all added, bringing the Roku player up to speed with game consoles and even the most capable connected devices.  Net exclusive television shows like CO-OP and Diggnation are available through the new Revision3 channel.  Other video additions include,, and Mediafly.

Motionbox and framechannel both offer places to put your own videos and photos online for viewing, much like Flickr and Facebook photo.  Mobiletribe is an interesting addition as it was mainly created for use with cellular phones, and lets users not only access their favorite social networking sites, but view video content from YouTube as well.

Roku hopes that these additions will jump start their open platform Roku Channel Store.  "Now content producers and distributors -- from single person shops to billion dollar corporations -- can deliver their content directly to consumers without having to go exclusively through cable operators, satellite networks or TV affiliates,” says Roku founder Anthony Wood.

All of Roku’s players will receive the new channels in an automatic update in the next two weeks.  Roku owners who want it now can get the update directly from Roku’s website along with instructions for manual installation.
