Samsung has finally retaken its lead as the number one provider of LCD televisions in the United States with a solid 16.8% share of the market.   Perhaps saying that Samsung has retaken anything is a bit grandiose though, since their share has still decreased significantly in the last year. In the third quarter of 2008, Samsung held 21.6% of the market share.

That means over one fifth of all LCDs sold in the US were Samsungs.  That’s impressive without question, and nearly five percent higher than Samsung’s share of the third quarter of 2009.

Vizio, the former market leader, is down five percent – to 15.7% - in the last three months, but still up nearly five percent from their 10.9% market share in third quarter 2008.  In fact, among the top five producers of LCD televisions, only LG managed to increase its share from second to third quarter of 2009.
The decrease across the board shows an increased support for smaller manufacturers.  Both boutique high-end LCDs and lower end Wal-Mart brand manufacturers have seen increasing sales in the last few months.

LED backlit TVs increased in sales in the last quarter, from 2.1 percent to 3.7 percent.  Analysts at iSuppli, who provided the data, credit aggressive pricing and marketing by Samsung for the majority of the increase.  By offering a smaller price difference between CCFL and LED televisions than most companies, Samsung was able to capture a strong piece of the LED backlit TV market.  With sales this quarter, the U.S. has become the worldwide leader in LED backlit LCD set purchases.

Christmas is expected to pick up more sales for large electronics companies like Sony who are able to offer bundles of televisions along with game consoles, Blu-ray players, and speakers.
