Known better as a manufacturer of monitors and projectors, Viewsonic has entered the digital media player race, boasts the most complete codec set on a media player to date.  The VMP70 will run around $100 when it is released later this month.  The various MPEG formats are all represented, as are Divx and Xvid.  WMV, H.264, MKV and Real Media files are all playable, as well as other file types not listed.

On the audio side, the VMP70 falls a bit short.  While it does offer playback of WMA, MP3, DTS, OGG and AAC, the presence of FLAC support is sorely lacking. The VMP70 offers HDMI, component and composite connections as well as SPDIF.  Strangely, the device doesn’t have any networking capability, only playing files attached via one of the pair of USB drives.

All in all, the VMP70 appears to give less bang for the hundred bucks, considering that similarly priced options offer more compatibility and most importantly, the ability to pull files off of a home network.
