Samsung Electronics and Sony Corporation announced they will be investing $2,000,000,000 to create the world’s largest LCD panel production factory. The new plant will be located in South Korea and will begin production of the LCD panels some time in 2007.

The new factory will surpass the output of the largest maker of LCD panels. Sharp Corporation. Amazingly, Samsung-Sony’s LCD plant will be able to cut six 55 inch panels or eight 47 inch panels simultaneously. This new plant will cut production costs to balance out the decline in sell prices.

With this plant’s increased ability to cut larger sheets of glass, LCD TVs will surely increase in popularity and possibly drop in price. Critics love LCDs but to date if you want a large and flat HDTV on your wall you must consider a plasma set. With this announcement and advances being made elsewhere in LCD development – expect to see LCDs be equally if not more popular than plasma TVs with consumers as soon as the 2007 selling season.
