Today begins the CEATEC exhibition in Japan, but Toshiba couldn’t wait for what may be the biggest unveiling of the show.  Hotly anticipated and surrounded by rumors and speculation, the Cell REGZA 55X1 has finally been officially shown.  And yes, it’s impressive. The Cell REGZA boasts a 3TB hard drive and has the capability to display and record up to eight programs simultaneously.

When contrast ratios get to a certain point they seem to lose all meaning, but it’s still pretty difficult to ignore the 5,000,000:1 ratio that Toshiba claims for their new TV.  The 55X1’s 1080p 240Hz display is divided into 512 separate areas for LED backlighting, and features “self-congruency technology” for improved detail towards the screen edges.

On top of a stunning display, a seven speaker sound bar is also included as part of the set.  Toshiba also took some time to talk about future plans for the Cell processor including a 3D set, a 4K2K set that upconverts 1080p signals, and televisions with built in home media servers.  Pricing on the 55X1 is still up in the air, but Toshiba has confirmed that it will be available in Japan this December.
