Pioneer’s Project ET, also known as E-Tap, is a set top box that does nearly everything you’d want a set top box to do.  Still in the prototype phase, E-Tap’s features aren’t set in stone, but neither is its existence as a consumer product.  Pioneer has gone so far as to say that this may be a platform for future releases, rather than a product itself, depending on consumer response.

Let’s talk about what this thing can do, the current prototype anyway.  It can play Blu-ray discs, and rip managed copies to its hard drive for playback.  It streams various video services including Netflix and YouTube.  It can be controlled by iPhones or Android based phones.  The E-Tap lets you update your Twitter, and stream LastFM and Rhapsody.  It even lets you rip FLAC audio from a CD.

Public response will determine what happens with this, whether it gets features added, such as a cable card, or gets features like Blu-ray pulled all comes down to what consumers think of it.  No official word is yet available on what the completed project will be, but Pioneer speculates that a consumer product could be available by the beginning of next year.
