The first quarter of 2009 saw big screen LCD sales surpass big screen plasma sales for the first time in history.  The report from Quixel Research shows that revenue for the LCD market grew by 55% quarter-to-quarter and 200% year-to-year, while plasma dropped 12% quarter-to-quarter and 20% year-to-year.

Volume-wise, in the 55-inch and above market sector, plasmas remained flat while LCDs grew 137% quarter-to-quarter and nearly 50% year-to-year.  The entire large-screen display market has seen decreased revenue, going from $5.5 billion in Q4 of 2008 to $4.1 billion in Q1 of 2009, and seeing a 22% decrease in shipment.  LCDs now make up 78% of the 44-inch and larger display market.
