Plasma HDTV Shipments Drop Again

DisplaySearch’s study on the fate of plasma HDTVs paints a bleak picture.  Year-over-year, shipments have dropped 22% to less than 2.8 million in the first quarter of 2009, while quarter-to-quarter numbers showed a drop of 28%. The plasma industry saw Pioneer and Vizio bow out earlier this year, discontinuing production in favor of LCD and other technology.

Also the 32-inch model was recently dropped, which is what DisplaySearch says is driving these excessively low numbers. Almost all plasma manufacturers, with the exception of Panasonic, have halted investing into expanding their capacity, and DisplaySearch says that the competitive edge will become improved technology in the fabrication process and display properties.  Panasonic is currently the market leader with 39% of market share, with Samsung (31%) and LGE (22%) not far behind.

What a shame. Once again a superior technology is going the same way that the
BETA vs VHS wars had years ago. BETA was clearly the superior tape format yet
VHS pulled ahead due mostly to consumer stupidity and lack of interest in
quality.
I'm in the market for a 50" plasma and hope to purchase very
soon. I will stick with the superior technology and let the other bozo's ride
the short bus as they think they're getting something better.

Pioneer's screens were made by Panasonic anyway. So that is what I went with and
got a 42 at a fantastic price. Thing that is going to start kicking all displays
in the A** is the new LED technology. Once the price point comes down in a few
years i may be seriously looking at those.

The freedom to write does not include the obligation to know what you are
talking about. So 'whatchel" says with any qualification that "Pioneer's
screens were made by Panasonic anyway." News to me, after selling the line
for all the years they have been available. So some of the present Pioneer
models (not all) may have panels (not Panasonic designed) fabricated by
Panasonic. This is the inspiration to buy a Panasonic 42"? Heavy lifting
here!
