Adams Media Research released a report looking at trends in the Blu-Ray industry.  The first quarter of 2009 saw a doubling of Blu-Ray sales compared to the first quarter of 2008, with over 9 million discs selling between January and March.

It noted that the popularity of these high-definition discs is likely to increase, with more than 10 million households already owning a Blu-Ray player, and Sony soon to be packaging full-length games and Blu-Ray movies onto the same disc.

Complimenting this study is the NPD Group’s reassuring news on the vitality of the physical disc media.  According to their study, within the past 90 days, 51% of survey respondents had purchased either a DVD or a Blu-Ray disc.  Also, they report that spending on home entertainment-related products has not dropped significantly since last year overall.

Home Cinema Buyer  - It will be a good 2009 for Blu-ray     |2009-04-22 08:37:27
As the format gets more popular, so the prices will come down and we'll see that
rapid increase in disc buying and player adoption that we saw with DVD. In these
tough times many people are looking for an excuse to get something glossy and
flashy, and I think Blu-ray could well benefit.
