NPR Labs, under the supervision of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), will be conducting a $350,000 study to determine how HD radio signals can be strengthened without interfering with regular FM broadcasting. For some, the HD signal is lost when they take their radio indoors.
An NPR spokesperson explains that HD broadcasting on the radio is only using about 1 percent of its possible power, which is the cause of this problem. Although broadcasters want to raise this up to at least ten percent, there is a significant possibility that this will interfere with analog FM signals. This study should be complete by the end of the summer. |
