Samsung Producing LCD HDTVs with LED Backlighting
Samsung has announced that it will begin mass producing Edge-lit LED displays.  In a move that responds to demand for slimmer, lighter LCD TVs, especially useful for wall-mounting, Samsung will be making this technology specifically for larger TVs.

Edge-lit LED backlighting is mercury-free, and is more energy-efficient than direct-lit LED LCDs.  These new displays will be about a quarter as thick as the current LCDs on the market, and consume around 40 percent less power. Samsung’s Edge-lit LED LCDs will be available in 40, 46 and 55 inches.
