Neothings is showcasing the LightSpider, a home audio, video and control system that relies on only a single optical wire, this week at EHX Spring 2009.  Most HDMI extenders on the market require Cat 5 cables, signal amplifiers and other obtrusive additions in order to transmit signals.  The LightSpider will be able to reach distances of 300 feet with only a single wire.

OWLink Technology is what drives this device, using Digital Light Interface to transmit uncompressed audio, video and other data.  According to CEO of Neothings, Bill Paul, the LightSpider will be able to transmit “…HD video, 100MB Ethernet, RS-232, IR, USB, several additional channels of digital audio, and more,” using this technology.

No pricing information is available for the LightSpider, but it should become more economical the greater the distance required.  For a 30 foot transmission, other solutions might be cheaper; but for 300 feet, LightSpider may offer a lower cost and with less clutter than the average Cat 5 or HDMI solutions.
