Toshiba Ordered to Pay Out in DLP Lamp Lawsuit

A 2007 class action lawsuit against Toshiba has been decided.  The settlement requires that Toshiba pay out more than $1 million to about 265,000 persons.  The lawsuit claims that Toshiba DLP HDTVs were failing prematurely and requiring the consumer to purchase replacement lamps for the projection system.  The replacement lamps were susceptible to the same issue, requiring even more replacement lamps.

The lawsuit finds that Toshiba needs to reimburse the consumers who bought a lamp that failed before its quoted lifetime.  It also requires that Toshiba extend their replacement lamp warranty from six months to 12 months.

My Toshiba 72inch is about two years old and has gone through three projector
lamps. One lasted two months, the other two weeks and one for nine months. I
have now ordered number 4. I have bought extended warranties and the businesses
will not honor them. Can I get compensated for these lamps from Toshiba? This
dosen't even include for the lost time in watching my own TV.

Lamps are not failing this quickly. Where are you guys buying your lamps? If
you are buying generic lamps you will have these issues.
Steve Murray  - Toshiba Lamp Failures   |2010-05-13 17:20:12
I have replaced the lamp 3 times in the past 4 years.
Is there really
conpensation from Toshiba for my TV?
I don't want any more lamps unless Toshiba
can Gaurantee it for 5 years. The TVs are junk without a reliable lamp.

I just want to know if this 2007 class action lawsuit against Toshiba, will
reimburse me for the four lamps I bought for my TV? Your assistance in this
matter is greatly appreciated.
R Zimmerman  - Owner   |2009-11-07 11:41:07
I am wondering why I was never notified regarding this suit. We bought the TV
in April '07. The first bulb blew in July '07. The second in June '08. The
third was November '09. Is there still action that can be taken?
B Brown   |2009-11-10 20:18:02
This will be the second time I have had to buy a replacement lamp. When the
first one went out I was less than 30 days out of warranty and toshiba told me
to bad. No one ever told me about a lawsuit. Now today while searching for a
replacement TB25-LMP, I stumble onto this settled lawsuit. This is a buch of BS.
How come I was never notified?
G Lang   |2009-11-11 05:46:46
Likewise! what a rip-off. 5 lamps and now it's not working even with a new lamp.
Toshiba should at least have the decensy to allow you a big rebate on a new and
different Toshiba model. If they have one that is reliable. Otherwise, no more
Toshiba anything for me and I will put them down every chance I get.
S. Maillet  - Going on 3rd lamp   |2009-12-18 09:24:31
Bought a 50' DLP - never had issue w/ Toshiba before this evil TV. First lamp
failed before the TV was 2 yrs old. Second lamp lasted 5 months before it blew.
I haven't been able to use my TV since AUG of 2009! I now have the money but I
am seriously considering replacing the TV - AND MY LAMPS were Toshiba OEM. They
refused to honor the wanrrenty.
P Davis  - this is my 5th lamp   |2009-12-28 10:23:33
I have had my TV since 2004 and i have replaced my lamp now for the 5th time.
The television is really nice when its working and having children waiting and

We bought our 52 inch toshiba DLP in 2006 and we did buy the extended warantee.
they have replaced at least 4 bulbs and a service repair guy came to put in a
new valance.
A week before the warantee was to end another lamp blew again. We
waited a week and they finally said they wouldnt replace it, so we bought one,
then they called to say they are sending out a repair guy.
I was told by best
buy that if the repair man writes it up correctly we could end up getting a
different tv in exchange. Does anyone relate to this or know?

I was reading the headline and the threads and would like to know if anyone has
a telephone # or contact info to follow up on this? I bought our Toshiba in
2005 and replaced the lamp within 6 months we got it, and have since replaced it
3 times! It just blew again last week (which makes it 4 times!!!) and we're fed
up with this. I live in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Thanks.

People out there who bought toshiba big screens, I have went thru the best buy
extended warantee and got nowhere and also toshiba.
Basically you are all
stuck with a pile of electronics that you have to buy a new lamp every 6-12
months.
All i can say is good luck, I have been doing this for too long. I am
sick of dealing with staff at bestbuy and toshiba.
Carol Delucia  - toshiba lamps   |2010-02-15 18:44:44
I purchased my 46" toshiba 4 years ago, I have since replaced the bulb every
year. My last puchase was less than 180 days ago and bulb went today. I have
made no progress with Toshiba after the warranty of TV. I will not purchase
toshiba again or would I recommend them the service was horrible and their
product is terrible.

Hello,

I have the same issues and questions regarding these issues as most of
you in here .. but are ANY f you getting a response or are we spinning our
wheels? I too would like reimbursement for the 3 lamps I've had to buy over the
3yr period that I used my 52" toshiba DLP (that now sits in my garage
because I'm sick of haing to fix it every year). Is it too late to get in on
this lawsuite payout? where do i need to go? (since I also was never notified
about it!)

I have a 56" Toshiba model 56HM195. the color is off and does look alittle
dim. Does this mean I need a new lamp. We have had this TV since late 2004 and
the TV is hardly used. In theater room and not used often. Really bumbed that
it is the bulb, but not sure if it could be something else.
help?
beverly   |2010-03-07 07:09:09
Kris...It does sound like your lamp is going to go out on you.
Your just lucky
that you have had it as long as you have.
We have had our tv for 4 years and
replaced the bulb at least 4 times.
Be prepared to spend about 200.00 for a new
bulb and dont get the generic one.
Good luck

We purchased a 52in Toshiba in 2005 and have had to replace the bulb four times
and a valance once. The first three bulbs and the valance were covered on our
warranty with ABC warehouse. This fourth one will not be covered because they
jacked the price of our extended warranty up to high. However in searching for
a replacement lamp I noticed that we were paying more for the warranty then what
the lamps cost. We were told the lamp is worth $600.00. We will not ever
purchase a Toshiba television again. Especially when this one cost $3200.00.

I have hd the same issues with my 72" however i feel a little blesed because
i have had the set for about 5 years without issues except for the screen
turning green at times, which after turning off would carrect the problem. Now I
find my self in the same hot seat as others. Have replaceced the bulb and also
purchased a Ballast on Ebay which worked for two days. So now Im bot sure if its
the lamp or the Ballast. Seems like to me there should be another Suit for the
Ballast. Does anyone know what component actually goes out on the ballast. I
would rebuild it myself since I see that companies are offering to do this.
TT  - Finally blew out   |2010-04-26 09:01:36
I've had my Toshiba 62" for 4 years now, and the bulb has finally blown out.
The tv is usually on a good 4-6 hours a day, so I was suprised it lasted this
long. I have friends with Samsung sets that have replaced a blulb every year, so
I can't complain.

I was actually notified of the suit, it happened after I had replaced the lamp

just occurred again and when I called and explained to Toshiba my lamp exploded:

Bobby Blueitt  - You should have seen it   |2010-05-21 19:44:21
I received my new one today. Bulb that is. The other one went out with a pop.
When I pulled it out, you should have seen the chip out of the outside of the
bulb and the damage on the inside cracked the lens. I wonder if that explosion
could become big enough to damage the rest of the tv or home for that matter.

Dano  - I feel lucky   |2010-07-04 16:29:23
Our first bulb blew today on our 50HM66. We purchased the tv in June/06, so it
lasted a little over 4 years. The TV wasn't used every day, but probably
averaged 20-25 hours a week over its life.

Now I'm worried that if I get a
replacement bulb, it'll only last a few months. If that's the case, then I'll
be pretty disappointed.

We'll see what happens.
Paul  - Shouldnt of bought it.   |2010-07-18 18:27:48
I also have been conned like all these people that are complaining of the
endless bulbs they have had to purchase. I also purchased a replacement bulb for
my 52 in dlp toshiba in 2008 and i have to replace another. I hardly even watch
tv. I think its an obvious scam and i would like to get info on how i could be
compinsated for this problem. It seems a replacement bulb only lasta acouple
months to a year. wich means it costs 300 dollars every year or other year to
have these tv's working. Please respond someone with info on a law suit thats
legit.

my tv has been sitting in the garage for the past year i got tired of replacing
lamps
Kwellen   |2010-10-03 21:41:00
I'd be interested in a class action suit against Toshiba. They should have done
the honorable thing and at least allow us a decent discount on the bulbs since
they know there is a major problem in their design. They are still profiting
off these bulbs. I count myself more fortunate than some, after reading some of
the other posts, that my 52HM84 just blew it's 3rd bulb a few months ago. I
think I've had this set since 05' and I run it on the low lamp setting always.
I have been debating on whether or not to buy another bulb or just call the tv a
total loss and buy a different technology and brand. Never again will I buy
anything with their name on it.
Paris  - Thanks Santa!!!   |2010-10-07 09:41:40
Well, Santa brought the POS Toshiba for Christmas 2006. Atleast he brought the
additional warranty from Sears too. So Sears replaced 2 bulbs and I have
replaced 3 more and was searching for another bulb when I discovered this site.
So the $900 tv that Santa brought cost an additional $250 for the warranty and
$500 in bulbs. AWESOME! Who owns Toshiba anyway? the Taliban???

Got my piece of crap Tosihba 56HM195 HD Projection television tv in jan 07.I
believe the salesman called it "state of the art".
I am on my 4th
lamp!! I was "lucky" enough to have pd almost 300.00$ for the 5 yr
extended warenty.
The second replacement bulb Toshiba told me I should have a
TV repair service look at the tv. They found "no problem" charged me
100.0$
I was never notified of a problem with the lamps or any civil suits.
Shame on you Toshiba. You took the cowards way out and just stopped making them
and left us holding the bag!!
As I said I am in the process of waiting for my
4th bulb now. I thought of trying an aftermarket,(maybe they are made better)
but that wouldn't be covered. Customer service at Toshiba sucks besides. Rude
and very aloof!!

What is the difference between knowing if you need a color wheel or a ballast?
My set is fine for awhile, then the screen turns purple and green. The picture
looks hazy like and there is a loud humming or buzzing sound. Then the screen
will go black. There is a red blinking light that the flashes twice and the tv
instruction book says its the lamp. However the tv will start up with a normal
lit screen. Any answers to this?

Doug Martin  - Toshiba Quality Is Terrible   |2010-12-19 07:31:06
I have a Toshiba 52HM85 purchased from Leon's furniture, this TV has been a
nightmare from day one. Two months after is was purchased the color engine and
bulb had to be replaced. They delayed for over 2 months and finally they pulled
an assembly from a unit on the production line. I've since had the colour wheel
replaced for noise and just 5 minutes ago I had the fourth bulb blow. I
purchased an extended warranty which covered everything but the present bulb.
I've had a Sony projection model from 1984 which replaced this TV. I never
replaced a bulb in that TV. I'm very dissatisfied with this unit. If there's
any further help for ripped off consumers could someone contact me.

I purchased a 52" (52HM84) in 2005 and have replaced the damn bulb Three
times and it just went out again...that's FOUR TIMES!! BULL$$$$HIT!!
Pete  - Not a single problem 5 years running   |2011-01-07 15:53:33
I have the 65" DLP now for 5 years, have not replaced a bulb yet, no
problems at all. 4-6 hours use daily.. cable, video games, blu-ray. Still has a
great picture. Only now after 5 years is it dimming ever so slightly, but that
is expected for this amount of time passed.

Run the bulb in LOW POWER mode and
you will extend the life tremendously. keep the ventilation unobstructed for
proper airflow or you will be asking for trouble. RTFM for all the warnings
about ventilation, and do not touch the bulb when changing it. A little oils
from your fingers on the bulb glass is a death sentence for the bulb.

Great DLP
tv in my opinion, never had any issues.

my 2 cents worth.

I purchased a Toshiba seven years ago. It was the worst
investment that I have ever. I have replaced the lamp three times. Each lamp
costs over two hundred dollars. What kind of company would even think to make
such a lousy t.v. Can you imagine puchasing a t.v. for one price and not
knowing that you would have to keep spending money on the same t.v. every year?
It's ridiculous. I would be extremely interested in a class action suit against
toshiba. I think what they did is highway robbery. I cant' understand how
someone would let toshiba do this to their customers.
Dave   |2011-01-08 05:28:46
Second replacement bulb after 3 years on my Toshiba 50" Hm67.
Not happy at
all after reading earlier posts. In the long run Toshiba will pay the price
because it sounds like alot of people will no longer buy Toshiba including me.

Jim  - bulb cracked the lens   |2011-01-31 15:53:19
another burned out bulb but this time it cracked the lens inside the t.v.
Robert Sinatra   |2011-02-03 11:02:10
I have a 2007 65" Toshiba DLP HM167. I am now on my third lamp. Despite
having put in a Philips lamp yesterday, I still can't get the set to come on.

Two questions. Does the replacement lamp that Toshiba has to replace is
limited to the 2004 and 2005 models or is it extended to 2007 models. Without
having brought anyone to see the set, I was told that the ballast resistor is
often the problem. Is this true and is a ballast resistor the same as a ballast
or does it control the ballast? Are they one and the same?

I regret having
purchased this unit, for the only thing that is justifying the replacement is
the total cost of the unit. While Toshiba customer service has been quite
helpful and responsive, this is not a purchase that I am pleased about and want
something done about this or I will never purchase a Toshiba product again

We purchased a Toshiba 56 in HDTV in May 2006. We have had problems re
streaming with the picture when set is turned on. We have now replaced Lamp
Unit Model D95-LMP several times.
Just by accident I learned about the lawsuit
today How can I join this lawsuit? What is my remedy?
MP  - Lucky I guess   |2011-05-07 09:58:54
I got my 50HM66 on Oct 06 and original lamp lasted 13,000 hours. Got the
replacement on ebay for $120 and lamp lasted less then two months.
Sold it
locally for $50 as is. Considering that I paid for it only $990 tax included it
wasn't that bad but will not force the lady luck and start replacing bulbs.
michael belotti  - i like to know you , i was not told about the Laws   |2011-05-21 13:52:51

If anyone knows how to get reimbursed or how to join the class settlement (if it
is not too late) for the Toshiba DLP bulbs, let me know.
polodachs@comcast.net

I have burned thru 4 bulbs already and I am fed up.
I will never buy Toshiba 'anything' ever again.
Tom  - Toshiba DLP Lamps   |2011-10-17 18:33:56
On my 2nd lamp for my tv and it just went out after 6 months. I hate to keep
buying lamps so I am wondering if anyone has had any luck with Toshiba getting
some type of credit towards a new tv? Thanks
Richard  - Mr   |2011-10-26 11:57:26
I bought my Toshiba DLP 52HM94 in 2005 and I've had to change over six lamps
including the ballast. I've spent close to 1000 dollars over the years including
technical assistance to replace the ballast. In the yr 2005 I bought this Tv for
$2,500 dollars and it's costing me more and more money to maintain it. Someone
needs to take up all our cases, because toshiba refuses to even acknowledge
there's a problem. We want not a temporary patch, but a permanent solution to
the problem.
H.Hoffman   |2011-11-07 12:01:16
Has anyone gotten anywhere with any of this? We have the Toshiba 65" and I
am about to buy our 4th bulb..approx. 1 per year that we've had the tv-NOT
happy! We have spent so much on this TV...you can't just put it in the basement
when it is not working so has to sit in living room-dead until we buy a new
bulb...SO sick of this!
BFowers  - Loud Sound   |2011-11-12 18:56:25
I only had my toshisa for about two years and I doesn't watch it all time and
now it makes aloud sound like the fan is running i can't leave it plugged up.
After reading the other problems on here I would like to know if my lamp is
going out I have a 62' flat screen.
Hmmm  - Well...   |2012-01-22 19:51:51
I have a 50inch toshiba dlp and if you clean it out every once in a while it
might help. Just like all electronics you can't expect it to fight off dust and
dirt on it's own. If you did research on ANY DLP tv you will see bulbs tend to
last about 1 to 2 years...So if you are complaining about having to replace your
bulb 3 times and you've had your tv for 5 years it's actually normal. I've had
mine and only had to replace it once with regular cleanings...
John Sullivan  - DID ANYONE GET CONTACTED FOR THIS LAWSUIT..???   |2012-07-02 14:33:00
Hey Peeps, I bought this Projection t.v from Brault and Martineau with the full
extented warrently. The bulbs did not last a year . I was wondering to all did
anyone get contacted by Toshiba Canada or the store where they were bought. I
contacted The store and was told my warrenty expired so I had to buy new bulbs
elsewhere. Does anyone know where to call or contact the
people in charge.
Joel DeFelice  - POS Toshiba Lamps   |2012-08-23 16:00:33
Tv indicated with solid yellow/orange light and blinks 3 times starting up
twice.

Bulb was blown. Replaced it with Generic. Bulb lasted a day.

Called CS
and I was treated like an intruder. They all know about the lawsuit and you get
"Sorry sir you tv is out of warranty"

Thats bad bad biz. You sell a
defected product that fails over and over and over again and get pushed away by
some crap policy.

FYI: You have to buy OEM Bulb because the TV can tell its
generic and will blow extremely quick.

Were all getting F-ck-d! Thanks
consumers of 2,500 TV's.

Do Not BUY TOSHIBA AGAIN PEOPLE.
Douglas Schulz  - lamps for toshiba dlp   |2012-11-14 18:13:43
I have a 56" Toshiba 56MX195 dlp HDTV. I bought in Feb. 2007 and I don't
use it much. But when I have, I have had to replace the lamp three times and now
I have to replace it again. Am I eligible for reimbursement for them lamps or
could I get this next one I need free. And if I am eligible for payment or a
free lamp how do I go about it. Any information would be helpful. thanks.
Dirk  - Upset Toshiba DLP TV owner   |2012-11-23 11:41:11
I purchased a 72" Toshiba in 2006, as soon as the 2 yr warranty expired, a
week later my first lamp blew. Yesterday I ordered my 8 th lamp. I had surgery
on 9/21/12, while in the hospital lamp blew, we had a spare, (started ordering 2
@ a time), I get out of the hospital on 9/24/12' lamp blew again on on
10/5/12', ordered another, found one with a year warranty or 6000 hours. It blew
on 11/21/12, company stated that it takes a minimum of 2 weeks to process the
lamp once it is returned, so we are suppose to go weeks w/out a TV. I ordered a
lamp from the same company, pending refund or replacement of the bad lamp. I do
reccomended going thru Amazon, they covered the (1) day shipping cost,
approximately $30.. Does any one know how they got away w/out notifying all
Toshiba TV owners of that law suit, I returned my warranty card, did not get a
thing about that litigation. We need to start a petition, some attorney out has
to be a Toshiba TV owner with similar issues and the knowledge and resources to
fight again for the rest of us who were not compensated in the original law
suit. Sad part is, my picture is awesome when I have a good and/or new lamp.
Anyone have any updated information about any plans for a new civil case, one
already started, anything..??
Luisa  - MAD toshiba dlp tv owner   |2012-11-29 14:32:49
We purchased this dlp tv and paid like $2,500 for it. Within 6 mos it blew out!
We purchased the Sears warranty luckily which cost $300 every 2 yrs that covered
replacements until we found out about lawsuit. Which I don't think was fair they
should have been required to replace all the defective tvs and refund money. Not
just extend warranty. I think we should all get together and bring a new
lawsuit.
Pantall1  - Must be lucky   |2012-12-26 14:37:11
We must be lucky. We purchased the Toshiba 65HM167 65-Inch 1080p DLP Rear
Projection TV 4 years ago and have still not had to replace the bulb.

Ray   |2013-01-31 23:17:26
We bought a 62" toshiba and I'm on my 6th bulb
The last bulb was generic
fron China and has been going for over a year , I'm just waiting for this bulb
to blow and then it's plasma or other bulb less tv ... Probably Samsun or LG
....BTW the china bulb cost 75 bucks ,compared to over 200 from Toshiba ...
Bob   |2013-02-18 08:07:18
I've had my 62 inch Toshiba DLP since 2007. I've replaced the bulb only twice.
My TV is powered up several hours a day. I have to wonder if the people who go
through so many bulbs have a lot of smoke or other environmental factors that
contribute to particle build up on the bulb lens and then over-heating causes
bulb failure. I keep telling my wife we'll buy a new TV next time.... but so
far...
