Sony may be preparing for the day when CDs are a thing of the past with their new Blu-spec discs.   This format was launched in Japan this past November, but much of the details still remain vague.

CDJapan claims that the discs have a “…new approach to the faithful reproduction of music…” by using technology similar to Blu-Ray discs.  Both the laser and the disc itself are the same type that Blu-Rays use.  There are some Blu-spec titles from Sony available on Amazon in the US, including Miles Davis , Jeff Beck , The Clash and a handful of others.  These discs retail for $25 in Japan and $35.49 on Amazon.
