6 Million Blu-Ray Player Target May Be Off

The faltering economy affects every industry, and consumer electronics is certainly no exception.  Industry hawks and insiders are keeping their eyes on the few sectors that they believe will be able to weather the storm, and may even see some growth during this turbulent time – one of which is the Blu-Ray market.

The CEA has estimated that Blu-Ray players may double in sales this year, to about 5.7 million units.  Yet Blu-ray didn’t meet last year’s production predictions.  And it is not as significant an upgrade, in many consumer’s eyes, as VHS to DVD was.

The prohibitive cost of Blu-Ray may be holding it back.  Prices are still drifting towards $200 for an entry level player, and the discs themselves cost $20, $30 or more, with very few “bargain bin” discs ever getting into the hands of the consumer.

Blu-Rays might be saved by the perfect pairing with 1080p TVs – consumers understand that Blu-Rays are the best performance player for these kinds of TVs, and are often willing to purchase the player once they’ve purchased the TV. Blu-Rays could also be given a boost by adding value, rather than reducing the price.  The BD Live and IPTV features are a good start, but marketing campaigns really reaching out to consumers regarding these features have been limited.

Until BluRay software will remain 3-4 times more expensive then DVD one average
consumers will not seriously consider this product no matter what benefits it
can bring.

I still feel that until they get one that is close to 100 and then the pricing
of disc down to around 10 each they will be SOL to get the public into buying
them. With the economy as down as it is people just aren't going to drop the
cash for these and will stay w/upconverted DVD's.

What comes first, the chicken or the egg? In this economy, just because ones
buys the player, why would that mean he will be replacing whatever NTSC discs he
has? I picked up a refurbished Sony BDP-S1 and did so just to get the upscale to
my Kuro. But with the seemingly demise of the Kuro, the average consumer has
decided that price will win against quality and thus, the BluRay IMO, will
remain a niche. For the ones not in the know, the Kuro is/was regarded as one of
the best TVs and is a plasma being made by Pioneer.

If car prices declined the way electronics prices do we could buy a Porche 911
for about $11,000. Since when is $200 prohibitive for a piece of electronics?
Do people want some quality or CCS (cheap chinese s**t)? The discs are also
dropping in price, you just have to go online. We are now experiencing the high
cost of everyday low prices - mfg jobs to china and the diminishing middle
class.

Yes there is now the danger that your home entertainment hub will be computer
based and access TV & Movies from the web in glorious full HD. So why invest in
soon to be "Dinosaur" physical media players when all can be accessed in
an instant via the web!!

Now we have free to air HD broadcasts on a digital terrestrial network or DTT.
So now we can watch full HD broadcasts. I notice a big difference in colour,
detail (brightness, contrast) and of course 5.1 surround sound - all 6 channels
at CD quality sound. And it is all FREE, FREE, FREE I tell you! If this trend
alone continues it is another blow to the Blu-Ray player. Just use your PVR to
chase-play commercials and there are many good programs and movies to see every
week... did I mention... all FREE!

Hi Mark,

I'm wondering what PVR are using for recording from antenna?

Hey Smart A,
I am using a Pioneer DVD recorder with 80Gb HDD at the moment
which is only on S-Video cable.
The HD box is Extra Terrestrial and has a USB
port for HDD connection. With this I will be able to Record/playback/chase-play
in full HD. Just waiting for the company software upgrade to enable PVR
function.
