Sharp and Sony made a joint announcement recently confirming that they will postpone their joint venture aimed at LCD production by one year. They cited the economy as the driving factor behind such a delay, and suggest that March 2010 will be a more stable and appropriate time for the partnership.

A firm agreement on the proposed delay will be made by June of 2009, while the two companies engage in talks until then. An LCD factory was already underway in Japan when this news broke.  Sharp had been building this factory, with Sony coming in at about 34% of the cost.  Sharp has announced that this factory will begin production in March of 2010.

This news comes as no surprise to industry hawks, who have noted that both Sharp and Sony have been cutting back on their LCD production.  Sony has outsourced more than 3 million LCDs to Hon Hai Precision, and Sharp has cut its LCD production by 10% in the past few months.
