Among the 25 films that the Library of Congress selected this year for preservation is the rock and roll cult, “This Is Spinal Tap.” This 1984 rock “mockumentary,” joins sci-fi groundbreaker “Alien,” and John Singleton’s “Boyz N The Hood” in the registry which now contains 350 films.

Making the list helps “ensure that the film is preserved for all time,” the Library said in a statement. The list is not an endorsement of the film's content but a recognition of the films importance in American film and cultural history and in general history.

Film is fragile and as it ages, it decays and eventually shrinks, becomes discolored and brittle. Ongoing care and attention is needed to keep film's color and images. Through proper storage and transfer of older film onto modern film stock, the films can be preserved.
