For the week ending June 8th, Nielsen has released the sales figures for DVDs and Blu-rays.  The ratio of Blu-ray sales to DVDs is holding strong - 91 percent DVD to 9 percent Blu-ray.  However, interestingly enough, the total sales in each camp declined this week.  DVD sales dropped by about 4.5 percent while Blu-ray sales dropped about one half of one percent.

These percentages may not seem like much.  However, it could be a sign of a trend.  With the economy in a lull (the nicest word I can find to describe it), entertainment may be an item that households being to forego.  At least for the time being.  With gas prices jumping nearly 50 cents in less than two weeks, it is easy to describe our economy as fragile.

On the other hand, the decline in sales could just be the result of the film titles being released.  Semi-Pro and Rambo topped the list in Blu-ray sales.  However, runner up titles such as Cloverfield and There Will Be Blood did not pull much weight in the the overall sales numbers.  With the release of Jumper this past week, the numbers may move into the plus category, but we will have to wait for those numbers.
