The Basics:
Panasonic is known for its plasma HDTVs, but did you know that the company also offers LCD HDTVs? The company keeps a clear screen-size delineation between the two technologies: LCDs are sized 37 inches and below, while plasmas are sized 42 inches and above. This 32-inch model is part of Panasonic’s 2008 lineup and sports a 1366 x 768 resolution.

All new Panasonic TVs include an SD card slot through which you can view JPEG photos; it’s also compatible with the GalleryPlayer system that lets you display professional photographs and works of art. This TV includes three HDMI inputs, including one on the side panel for easy access; these inputs do not accept a 1080p signal. Viera Link (HDMI-CEC) is available for more intuitive control of devices connected via HDMI. There’s only one component video input and no dedicated PC input.

Picture controls include four preset picture modes (with a game mode that reduces lag time between your gaming console and the video screen), three color temperature presets and an adjustable backlight to tailor the TV’s brightness to your viewing environment. A Power Save mode reduces light output to conserve energy. There are five aspect ratio options: Full, Just, H-Fill, 4:3 and Zoom, plus the ability to adjust the vertical position/size of the Zoom mode.

The TV has a simple all-black bezel, with a non-swiveling stand and a slim speaker bar that runs along the bottom of the unit.

The Upside:
This small TV can render a bright, colorful, well-detailed HD image. It’s a good fit for a brighter viewing area, like a kitchen or smaller living room. Its internal tuners and SD card slot add flexibility, and gamers will appreciate the side-panel HDMI input and the addition of a game mode to improve response time.

The Downside:
This TV doesn’t have a 1080p resolution or 120Hz technology to reduce motion blur, but neither of these traits is a huge issue on such a small screen. The lack of multiple component video inputs and a PC input limits connectivity choices, so this TV is a better fit for someone who has embraced HDMI-equipped components.

Conclusion:
Despite being known for plasmas, Panasonic has a good track record with its small-screen LCDs. The TC-32LX85’s price is competitive with similarly-sized models from the big-name LCD manufacturers, but you may find a more comprehensive set of features if you look elsewhere.
