The Basics:
Mitsubishi’s 144 Series of 1080p LCDs is a step down from the top-of-the-line 244/Diamond Series, yet it contains a lot of the same features and technologies. Like the higher-end models, this 46-inch TV uses Mitsubishi’s Smooth 120Hz technology, which doubles the TV’s frame rate from 60 to 120Hz to reduce motion blur.

On the connection end, this model doesn’t have the CableCARD slot or RS-232 port found in the 244 Series and it sports one less HDMI connection. You still get three HDMI inputs that accept 1080p/60 and 1080p/24, plus three component video inputs (including one on the side panel), dual RF inputs to access the internal tuners and a USB port for viewing digital photos.

The LT-46144 has a solid but not extensive amount of advanced picture adjustments, including an adjustable backlight and a PerfectColor feature that lets you precisely adjust the primary and secondary color points. It lacks the PerfectTint mode found on the higher-end models. There’s a game mode for minimizing lag time between a gaming console and the video screen and the TV has numerous aspect-ratio options, although it lacks the ability to display 1080i/1080p signals with zero overscan. Mitsubishi’s NetCommand system allows you to more intuitively control both analog and digital sources, while the Energy Mode cuts down on standby power consumption.

The LT-46144 has an all-black finish and swiveling stand. The UltraThinFrame design puts about an inch of frame around the screen, and the speakers run discreetly along the bottom panel, giving the unit a smaller profile than other 46-inch models.

The Upside:
The LT-46144 can produce a very attractive image, with rich color, excellent detail and good blacks for an LCD.  It’s a good fit for a bright or dark viewing environment, and the 120Hz technology helps reduce motion blur without changing the quality of film sources.

The Downside:
Like many LCDs, this TV’s viewing angle and screen uniformity are only average, and it doesn’t up-convert standard-definition signals as well as other models do. The speakers’ audio quality is sub-par, so you may want to mate this TV with an external audio system.

The LT-46144 is a good overall performer with a nice complement of features. Its 120Hz technology is not as pronounced as others on the market when it comes to smoothing out the motion in film sources, which some people prefer.
