The Basics:
Hitachi produces both plasma and LCD flat panels. The company reserves its bigger screen sizes for the plasma arena, so this 47-inch, 1080p model is the largest in the LCD lineup. The TV has a 1920 x 1080 resolution and uses a Super In-Plane Switching (S-IPS) panel to improve its motion and viewing angle; however, it does not offer 120Hz technology.

The connection panel sports three HDMI inputs (including one on the side panel) that accept 1080p/60 but not 1080p/24. You also get two HD-capable component video inputs, plus an RS-232 port to integrate the TV into a more advanced control system. The side-panel SD card reader allows you to view JPEG photos on the 47-inch screen.

The menu includes a solid but not extensive amount of picture adjustments. You get several preset picture modes, color temperature options and an adjustable backlight to tailor the TV’s light output for your viewing environment, but it does not offer direct access to advanced white-balance controls. You can set the TV’s timer to automatically switch between day and night picture modes. The TV features a split-screen viewing mode, as well as numerous aspect ratio options, including a mode that allows you to view 1080i/1080p sources with zero overscan. Automatic aspect ratio detection is also included, as is an Image Power function that reduces power consumption.

The L47V651 has an attractive cabinet design, with a glossy black frame and an automatic swiveling stand, controllable via the remote.

The Upside:
This TV can produce an attractive HD image, with pleasing color, excellent detail and solid blacks for an LCD. It’s also a versatile performer that is well-suited to a bright or dark room. The S-IPS panel improves the L47V651’s viewing angle and its performance with fast-moving images.

The Downside:
The lack of 120Hz technology means there are no special processing modes to reduce film judder, but the S-IPS panel does help reduce motion blur. Its blacks aren’t as deep as those of the best LCDs on the market, but this TV comes in at a lower price.

The L47V651 is a good everyday performer. Its original asking price of $3199.95 was somewhat high for an LCD that lacks advanced features like 120Hz technology; however, you can now find this TV for a lot less, making it a more enticing option.
