The Basics:
The 750U Series is Panasonic’s top-of-the-line 2007 plasma series; as such, it is priced slightly higher than the norm for Panasonic TVs. What distinguishes this higher-end line is the inclusion of two advanced picture modes: the Pro Setting and Studio Reference mode. The Pro Setting grants access to advanced controls to professionally calibrate the TV, while the Studio Reference mode is designed to, as Panasonic puts it, “provide the exact color reproduction of reference monitors used in film editing studios.” The TH-50PZ750U is a 50-inch, 1080p model that has thin side-panel speakers and a glossy black cabinet with chrome accents.

Like many new Panasonic models, this TV sports an SD card slot through which you can display photos and view AVCHD video; it’s also compatible with the GalleryPlayer system that lets you display professional photographs and works of art. This TV includes three HDMI inputs that accept 1080p/60 (but not 1080p/24), including one on the side panel for easy access.

Aspect ratio options include the ability to display a 1080i/1080p image with no overscan. The anti-reflective screen helps cut down on light reflections off the plasma glass, but there are no features to help prevent or counteract short-term image retention.

The Upside:
This TV is capable of producing deep blacks and solid light output for a good overall contrast ratio. It offers an excellent level of detail and rich colors, with little digital noise. The Pro setting allows you to dial in an even more accurate picture through calibration. It does not suffer from motion blur or viewing angle limitations.

The Downside:
A higher-end TV line should include RS-232 or at least IR connections, and this one does not. The TV does not accept 1080p/24 signals, and its film processing is only average. The sound quality of the tiny speakers is sub-par. The anti-reflective screen somewhat reduces light reflections, but this TV still isn’t the best choice for a very bright, sunlit room.

When this TV first came out in mid-2007, it was one of the best-reviewed models on the market. New plasma releases from Pioneer have overshadowed this a bit, but the TH-50PZ750U offers excellent performance for a lot less money.
