BMG to Place More Specific Labels on Explicit Albums

Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG) is the first major record company to institute a new self-imposed rating policy for albums with explicit lyrics and or subject matter. Expanding on the RIAA’s current Parental Advisory Program, BMG will place additional labels on albums with explicit material giving consumers more information about the nature of the content on the album with three categories - Strong Language, Violent Content and Sexual Content. Albums that contain multiple types of explicit content will have more than one label. These new labels will appear on the lower right corner of the album under the Parental Advisory Label.

"Our labeling initiative will offer parents additional tools to help them decide what is appropriate for them and their families, keeping in mind the rich diversity in our communities." said Rolf Schmidt-Holtz, Chairman and CEO of BMG.

This move by BMG mirrors the feature film industry which has required that all new films list specific reasons for ratings along with the standard rating system of G, PG, PG-13, R etc. on promotional materials and commercials.

Ultimately, BMG may be appealing to right winger parental groups while at the same time pumping up slumping sales. Records with parental advisory labels frequently do better with teens that are willing to pay for what their parents say they can’t have.
