A definite departure at times from the hard-rock foundation of Social D., ‘Solitaire’ is part Rock, part ballad, and mostly Rockabilly. Sometimes even bordering on country, this album is nothing if not Ness taking a chance. The good news is that this is a refreshing chance after so much of the same from Social Distortion. Specific triumphs here are the first single, "Don’t Think Twice," as well as "You Win Again," and the decidedly down-tempo "Long Black Veil." Frankly, Ness has never competed for any sort of lyrical crown, but few Rock artists have and this album doesn’t suffer because of it. It’s recording quality is also serviceable, helping make this album a must own for the Social D. fan and a recommendable disc for fans of that ever-dwindling genre known as Rockabilly.
