DCC Compact Disc
24 Karat Re-release
| Performance 9 | Sound 9 |

If you only own one Frank Sinatra record DCC's 24 Karat version of Duets should be the one. As Frank has moved into the post recording and touring stage of his career Duets serves as an excellent summary of a superstar's work. By bringing in some of the greatest names of his era as well as some of today's brightest talents Frank has once again immortalized his work in addition to reaching out to yet another generation of fans. I recall discussing with my 87 year old grandmother the days of her baby-sitting Frank in Hoboken, New Jersey while cooking sauce and playing one of my many Sinatra records on a recent trip home to Philadelphia.

The highlights of this record include "The Lady is a Tramp" duet with Luther Vandross. Who other than Frank can get away with calling a woman a tramp these days, without getting slapped or sued? Another highlight is Frank and Tony Bennett swinging out a great version of "New York, New York". "You can't take that away from me" with Natalie Cole and "I've got a crush on you" a duet with Barbara Streisand are also strong. A Duet with Kenny G probably helped sell a lot of units but the song is sort of watered down. One could consider this cut blasphemy to the great arrangements of the era of Carlos Antonio Jobim and Nelson Riddle.

The sound on the record is quite good considering some of the sessions were reportedly done in different cities. The DCC version of Duets sounds even smoother than the original CD release. Duets on DCC is a great addition to a large Frank Sinatra collection for someone who has grown up with Frank as well as a young music lover who is interested in learning how great The Chairman of The Board really is.
