Kiss your cable TV goodbye now that DirecTV has launched a new satellite to expand the amount of local channels available to subscribers in 41 major metropolitan areas in the United States. Although HDTV is the real future of DirecTV, many subscribers felt that the lack of local network channels was one of the services weaknesses.

It was not uncommon for some DirecTV subscribers to also have basic cable to watch local programming. A new satellite has been launched and now subscribers who are in a qualifying zip code are receiving additional local channels for no additional cost. DirecTV’s local channel package is a flat fee of $5.99 per month and depending on the users receiver model, will find these local channels in either the 2 - 99 channel range or the 800 - 900 channel range.
