Would
you believe that the sampling and tape loop revolution began back in
the 1960’s? Well, to a large extent it’s true. Over a decade before the
Bronx turned house parties on their ear with rap, and even longer
before Electronica was a concept let alone a genre, Steve Reich was out
in San Francisco becoming the world’s original re-mixer. Today, four
decades later, DJs from all around the world have taken his music and
re-mixed it into what you’ll find here.
Although none of the artists included were born
when Reich began his experimentations with the ‘sounds between the
sounds’ the essence of Reich’s work is captured here. Found on this
album is a past-meets-present sound that most fans of Ambient music
should both respect and enjoy. The artists included range from DJ
Spooky, Tranquility Bass, and Howie B. to Mantronik and Nobukazu
Takemura. The recording, mixing and mastering quality are all
impressive, and we recommend this album with little reservation.
