As a big Van Morrison fan I couldn’t wait to play this disc when it landed in my hands, after listening, I could have, should have, waited. While Morrison can still perform his awe inspiring solo’s they were not in abundance on this album.

The Skiffle Sessions were recorded live in Belfast in December 1998 and focus on "skiffle’ music. Skiffle is a style of music that is best described as folk, with an influence of swing and jazz. In addition to Lonnie Donegan and Chris Barber, well known musicians from the mid twentieth century, Dr. John makes a guest appearance playing the piano on "Good Morning Blues" and "Outskirts of Town."

Afficionados of folk music may find this disc enjoyable as it contains such classics as "The Ballad of Jesse James", "Midnight Special", "Goodnight Irene" and "Frankie and Johnny." Morrison fans who are not overly appreciative of folk music will be disappointed that Morrison is not featured more predominantly. After listening to "The Skiffle Sessions", folks songs with a tease of Morrison I was left unsatisfied and had to play his "Moondance" album to get my fill of classic Morrison.
