Britney Spears’ self-titled third album debuted at Number One on the charts this week after selling 746,000 units, dethroning the King of Pop. Michael Jackson's "Invincible" debuted at Number One last week, but ended in the No. 3 position on this week's charts.

Britney made musical history this week when she became the first solo female performer in the history of The Billboard 200 to have her first three albums debut in the number one spot. Britney also debuted at Number One in Canada, Austria, Germany, Israel, and Switzerland.

Despite all of the deserved success of Ms. Spears, the music industry as a whole is wallowing in a recession (see story) with sales off industry wide as much as 10 percent. At the same time, the feature film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone broke the all-time first weekend box-office records and Shrek sold 10 times more units (despite the higher cost of DVDs and video tapes versus a $16 CD) than the mighty Miss Spears.

Critics suggest that it is going to take more than new platinum records from N’Sync, Michael Jackson, Britney and Lenny Kravitz to return the music conglomerates to profit. Both new audio formats, DVD-Audio and SACD, are essentially being ignored by the major labels while DVD-Video explodes as the biggest consumer electronics success story in history.
