Universal Music Group, the world largest music company, announced Saturday that it will release an undisclosed amount of SACD titles.

The titles will consist of some new music and some catalog product however specific titles and or artists were not disclosed.

Sony has been drumming up support for its high resolution audio format SACD by providing support to music companies like Universal.

According to Krista Gariano, Director of Corporate Communications at Universal Music Group, "Universal is cooperating with Sony on this project with both Sony and Philips are providing help with services like DSD authoring, mastering, studio equipment, production and the manufacturing of the discs."

Gariano went on to say "We are not ruling out any other future formats." when asked about DVD-Audio and its surround sound backwards compatibility to 40,000,000 DVD-V players. SACD is backwards compatible to even more traditional Compact Disc players but rarely in surround sound.

Universal was also unsure as to exactly how many of the new SACD discs will be remixed to 5.1 surround. Currently, the large majority of SACD tiles are mastered only for high resolution stereo. Mastering for stereo is much more cost effective for a label because no one has to decide how a stereo recording is to be re-engineered into 5.1 surround sound. It is also important to note, all of the early SACD players sold were outfitted with stereo outputs not 5.1 analog outputs needed for high resolution surround sound.
