Multiple news sources, including the Associated Press and KRAL-TV in Raleigh, are reporting North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms is planning to retire in 2003.

About to turn 80 and reportedly suffering from prostate cancer, Helms is an ultra-conservative known for his stance against the National Endowment For The Arts (NEA), Public Television and a public spat over what he considered to be "obscene art" by photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.

The LA Times is projecting failed Presidential candidate, Elizabeth Dole will run in place of Helms in 2003. Helms’ projected absence could be relevant to the delicate balance of power in the Senate, especially if he retires early, before his term is up. For artists, musicians, film makers, television producers and supporters of the arts, Helms’ retirement can not come a day too soon.
