With
their first full-fledged rock album titled The Complex due out April 22
on Lava Records, Blue Man Group have joined forces with production
designer Marc Brickman (Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, Genesis, Nine Inch
Nails) to bring their first full-production U.S. concert tour to life.
The trek, will combine elements of performance art, rave culture and
rock when it launches May 18 in Washington D.C., and visits such cities
as Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. Tickets will go on sale
around April 1, though the actual on-sale dates vary by market. Updated
information can be found on blueman.com. Summer dates of the tour will
be announced at a later time.
Brickman will collaborate with Blue Man Group to push the boundaries of the concert experience. Says Blue Man founder Chris Wink: "When we first started conceiving the rock tour for The Complex, our vision was so ambitious we knew we'd have to get the best production designer in the world to pull it off. So we went straight to the top, to one of our artistic heroes, to Marc Brickman, who designed Pink Floyd's tours and many of our other most memorable rock experiences." Adds Wink: "Marc's technical knowledge and unique creative perspective is pushing our work to new levels. This show will not look like anything anyone has ever seen." According to Brickman, who has over 30 years of touring credits, he wanted to work with Blue Man Group because they "represent the essence of creativity in the music world. By the very nature of their 'free to explore the universe' vision, spontaneous and amazing moments are realized. That, to me, is rock 'n roll." Rising to the challenge, Brickman says he will "take what we all know as the rock 'n roll experience and break the mold." He continues, "The ephemeral nature of lighting, while on the surface a dramatic painting tool, can help to both translate the Blue Man experience and further explore the abstract realm that is their world. Just as music drives the listener's experience beyond the beat, melody and lyrics, lighting is the energy that allows the viewer to transcend the here and now." Blue Man Group will unveil this new concert production when they perform April 26 and 27, along with Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers and The White Stripes, among others, at the fourth annual Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival in Indio, CA. Blue Man Group’s set list will include songs from The Complex, featuring the upcoming single and video "Sing Along," as well as their unique take on the dance classic "I Feel Love," propelling the song with their trademark self-created percussive instruments.
