Beginning on SuperBowl Sunday at WRAL-TV (the CBS affiliate in Raleigh, North Carolina) Panasonic will begin sponsoring HDTV news broadcasts that are edited and played back on Panasonic DVCPRO HD high definition equipment. The broadcasts will be supported by a series of Panasonic-sponsored promotional announcements created to bring attention to the broadcasts and the HDTV format.

Panasonic has taken a major role in creating public awareness for digital television. They sponsored the first public broadcasts of HDTV in New York, Chicago and Boston, and have held numerous demonstrations for consumers throughout the United States. To encourage the growth of HDTV broadcasts, Panasonic also sponsored HDTV broadcasts of "Monday Night Football" and SuperBowl XXXIV and have entered into an agreement with CBS Television to underwrite the conversion of 17 prime time shows to the 1080i HDTV format during the 2000-2001 television season.

"The future of television is clearly digital," said Bill Mannion, Vice President and General Manager of Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company's Television and Network Systems Division, "and the benefits of HDTV are not limited to movies and sports. HDTV can provide the clarity, detail and sound that will help bring the drama and importance of local news to viewers. Panasonic is pleased to support WRAL-TV in the launch of its HDTV news programming. They are not only bringing the benefits of the new format to their viewers; they are once again leading the way for other broadcasters, demonstrating the viability of over-the-air HDTV broadcasting."
