Warner Music Group (WMG) and Microsoft just announced a multi-year agreement whereby WMG will use Microsoft Windows Media for future downloads of music over the Internet.

This means that Warner, using Windows Media Format as a primary format, will be able to deliver high-quality, secure music that can be played not only in hundreds of millions of digital media players on the PC, but also on virtually all consumer electronics devices that play back digital music.

Windows Media has recently been gaining momentum among content providers. For example, this summer EMI chose Windows Media to launch its download initiative with the largest single release of music on the Web by a music company to that point, and last week EMI expanded its download offerings. A few weeks ago, Sony announced a new European online music video channel in the Windows Media Format.

With all five major labels supporting Windows Media and with this new multi-year commitment from Warner Music Group, Windows Media is becoming the industry standard for digital media distribution.

"The choice of technologies for this initiative was critical, and using Windows Media helps us provide the best possible experience to the broadest possible audience," said Paul Vidich, executive vice president of Strategic Planning and Business Development for Warner Music Group. "Windows Media audio and digital rights management technologies have been widely adopted by popular software players and portable devices. Supporting Windows Media means virtually every digital media enthusiast can enjoy downloading music from WMG artists."

Windows Media Format offers CD-quality sound in half the file size of MP3, effectively doubling the music storage capacity of computers and personal audio devices. Windows Media DRM, now in its second generation, is the most widely deployed technology for protecting digital music against piracy.
