a few days after Universal Music Group joined the Blu-ray Disc
Association, Lions Gate Home Entertainment announced its support for
the format. Lions Gate will release new films, TV programs and other
titles from their library in Blu-ray as soon as the hardware is
launched in the US. Steve Beeks, president of Lions Gate cited
“Blu-ray’s storage capacity along with the level of copyright
protection the format offers, the demonstrated manufacturability and
acceptable cost proposition” among the reasons for the company’s
support.
Lions Gate is the latest movie studio to announce plans to release their movies in Blu-ray format, joining Sony Pictures, Buena Vista Home Entertainment and Twentieth Century Fox. According to TechNewsWorld, those four sell 45% of DVDs in the US (Lions Gate alone sells 70 million units a year). Recent developments have put Sony’s Blu-ray ahead of Toshiba’s HD-DVD. Reports suggest that as As Blu-ray racks up, HD-DVD supporters Paramount and Universal are pushing back plans to release their titles in HD-DVD. The format war is becoming more defined each day with Sony rallying more support for its Blu-ray format.
