No matter how many stories I have written about how screwed up the music business is – there is hope and it is coming June 8th in the form of a new album from Velvet Revolver entitled CONTRABAND. Much like Rage Against The Machine retooled with Chris Cornell as their frontman – Velvet Revolver is a hard rock band now comprised of Stone Temple Pilot’s frontman, Scott Weiland along with former Guns ‘n Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum.

The video for their single “Slither” will debut on MTV2 today while the song presented itself to me on Sirius Radio’s hard rock channel (channel 20 – Octane). What is striking about the tune is its energy. I haven’t heard a new song on the radio and been inspired to head to the record store for literally years. I was in Best Buy within 30 minutes of hearing “Slither.” Unfortunately, the album isn’t out until June 8, 2004 but the clerk in the record department said I was the second person to ask him for the record today. Velvet Revolver rocks hard with the kind of riff based, bluesy metal that made G&R, STP, The Cult, Led Zeppelin and so many other bands great. What takes “Slither” over the top is the energy paired with some legitimate musical talent. Believe it or not but there is a guitar solo that really rocks. Far too many “alternative” rockers are too busy fretting over their feelings and the pain from their childhood to actually crank up their amps and let the Les Paul scream.

I have only heard one track from the new lineup of Velvet Revolver but those who have seen them live (El Rey Theater in LA) say they are the real deal. This might be the first album in a while I preorder on Amazon.com. If you are looking for a good hard rocker, tune into Sirius or MTV2 to hear what I am talking about. Let’s hope this brand of musicianship based rock that ruled the airwaves in the late 1980’s makes an updated return (less hairspray this time guys) in a big way.
