Meridian, one of the world’s pioneers of audio technologies including MLP compression, has entered into an agreement that will allow Meridian to promote the Faroudja brand of video processing on a worldwide basis. Faroudja, owned by Genesis Microchip Inc., is an Emmy award winning technology firm best known for bringing the “line doubler” to the home theater market more than a decade ago. The deal matches an audio superpower with a video superpower.

Faroudja will no longer manufacture products under their own name thus will focus their design energy toward video advances for Meridian products.

The market has turned away from the once highly lucrative “black box” video processors that Faroudja is famous for selling. Already an integral part of Meridian’s G Series and 800 product lines, high end home theater enthusiasts should expect to see more cost-no-object video processing from inside their DVD players or AV preamps. This includes scaling traditional 480i to as high as 1080p with the quality that one associates with Meridian’s audio upscaling and reproduction.

The deal makes all kinds of sense considering Meridian’s distribution network hits a solid percentage of the best dealers that sell high end video paired with Meridian electronics. Traditional audio companies who have stuck with audio-only business models don’t prosper at the same level as companies who have embraced both audio and video in this HDTV driven home theater market.
